P&W working with Airbus, operators on engine problems of A320neo planes

P&W working with Airbus, operators on engine problems of A320neo planes

We are working to resolve this issue swiftly to minimize disruption. "IndiGo has only three such affected aircraft".

On the global level, engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney said the current population of impacted engines stands at 43 which are installed on 32 aircraft, of which 21 planes have one engine with the modified configuration, and 11 aircraft have two engines with that configuration.

IndiGo, India's biggest carrier, reportedly said on Saturday that it had withdrawn three affected planes from service and canceled some flights after the European Aviation Safety Agency warned of a new issue on the troubled engine program that may be connected to several in-flight shut downs.

India's IndiGo has grounded three jets, but regulators said its competitor GoAir is not affected.

Yet in recent months top officials at both Pratt and Airbus had signaled to investors that they were getting past the problems that have held back deliveries of the single-aisle jet and disrupted airline schedules. "The passengers have also been given choice of full refund as well", the statement added.

An IndiGo spokesperson said: "IndiGo confirms receiving the recommendations by Pratt & Whitney as well as the European Aviation Safety Agency with respect to the A320neo aircraft powered by PW1100G-JM engines". Airbus selected the PW1100 as the launch engine for the A320neo (new engine option) aircraft family, based on its fuel efficiency, noise reduction, and lower Carbon dioxide and NOX emissions.

"Like other P&W GTF engine powered A320 neo operators globally, IndiGo continues to operate its other A320 neo aircraft", IndiGo said in the filing.

Airbus has traditionally offered two engine options on the A320, and the company maintained that approach on the neo.

Greg Hayes, chief executive officer of United Technologies, said last April that Pratt incurred costs that weren't material to retrofit the engines and for "helping the airlines through some of this".

This problem follows a series of performance issues related to the engine's combustion chamber and carbon seal for one of the bearings witnessed for the said model over the last two years, during which, according to the civil aviation ministry, there were 69 engine removals and replacements for 23 aircraft operated by IndiGo, which is the largest A320neo customer for Airbus in the world.

Airbus too has issued an alert, saying these aircraft should not be used till further instructions.
