Unexploded WWII bomb to be detonated as London City Airport reopens

Unexploded WWII bomb to be detonated as London City Airport reopens

Just a year ago, the discovery of an enormous Allied bomb in the German financial center, Frankfurt, led to the evacuation of 60,000 people, while Berlin's Tegel airport had to be closed down while police disarmed a nearby Russian-made bomb of similar vintage.

The Newham Council local authority established a rest centre and asked residents to stay with family or friends if possible.

Royal Navy bomb disposal teams worked through the night and continued this morning to try to disarm and remove the device.

London City Airport remains closed after the weekend discovery of an unexploded Second World War bomb in the River Thames close by.

The latest bomb was found Sunday at the King George V Dock on the River Thames, one of the docks between which the runway sits.

"All flights in and out of London City on Monday are cancelled and an exclusion zone is in place in the immediate area".

Robert Sinclair, the airport's CEO, told passengers due to fly on Monday not to come to the airport.

The Metropolitan Police said properties within the exclusion zone had been evacuated and a number of roads were cordoned off.

"I recognise this is causing inconvenience for our passengers, and in particular some of our local residents".

London City Airport opened in 1987 in the disused docklands.

The discovery was made at about 05:00 GMT on Sunday at George V Dock during pre-planned work at the airport in east London, the Met Police said.

London City Airport is the 14th busiest in the United Kingdom with 4,540,000 passengers in 2017, according to data from the Civil Aviation Authority.

The issue is also not unique to London - as NPR's James Doubek reported, last August 70,000 people evacuated in Frankfurt, Germany, to allow authorities to defuse a British World War II-era bomb.

After specialist officers and the navy confirmed the nature of the device a decision was taken to implement an exclusion zone at about 10am.
