Ford, Holden, VW cars in biggest-ever Aussie recall for deadly airbags

Australia has ordered the recall of 2.3 million vehicles fitted with Takata Corp air bags that have been linked to deaths worldwide, in the country's biggest compulsory product recall.

The airbags have been associated with 20 deaths globally, including one death in Australia previous year. More than 20 people have been killed around the world - including a Sydney man - as a result of shrapnel propelled by airbag inflators that can deteriorate, propelling deadly shrapnel throughout vehicle cabins when triggered by a crash.

The recall will affect two in seven cars on Australian roads and features a diverse list of manufacturers including Ford, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, BMW, Jeep and Toyota.

The cost of the recall will be free to all affected auto owners, but they may have to join the queue - manufacturers say replacing airbags in all affected vehicles will take time due the large number of cars affected and a parts shortage.

"We put the safety of Australians first and foremost at all times", the prime minister, Malcolm Turnbull, told reporters.

- Manufacturers, dealers, importers and other suppliers will be required to locate and replace Takata airbags in a staggered recall by December 31, 2020.

An investigation by Australia's Competition and Consumer Commission found that Takata airbag inflators without a desiccant - a drying agent - or with a calcium sulphate desiccant had a design flaw.

Consumer watchdog boss Rod Sims said last year's voluntary recall applied to 2.3 million vehicles but only about 1.3 million had airbags replaced.

Consumers are urged to subscribe to receive notifications of new recalls as they are published and should visit to check if their vehicle is fitted with an alpha airbag, which presents an immediate risk to safety.

All defective Takata airbags will need to be replaced by the end of 2020, with priority of replacement given to airbags based on a range of factors including age and exposure to heat and humidity.

Concerned motorists can check if their vehicle has been recalled by visiting the Product Safety Australia website.

A list of affected vehicles could be viewed here. In 2008 internal tests from the manufacturer led to the first recall of the airbag due to rupture risks.

Some cars have already been voluntarily recalled by manufacturers, with Wednesday's action concerning those that have yet to be fixed.

The Australian Government's action follows similar moves to speed up the airbag replacement process in United States and several other European countries.

Over 136,000 Takata inflators have been replaced so far with an inflator from another manufacturer.

Volkswagen, which has around 100,000 cars that may be subject to mandatory action, is among a group of carmakers which previously resisted calls to replace Takata airbag components.
