Russian Federation vetoes United Nations resolution condemning Iran for involvement in Yemen

Russian Federation vetoes United Nations resolution condemning Iran for involvement in Yemen

"Today, Russia protected the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Iran", said Nikki Haley, the United States permanent representative to the UN.

Meanwhile, Iran's envoy to the United Nations says that the U.S. and the UK are trying to distract the global community away from Saudi Arabia's war crimes in Yemen by drafting such resolutions.

According to the report, a missile fired into Saudi Arabia in 2017 by the Huthis was made in Iran, though it was unable to definitively identify the supplier.

"This council needs to stand firm in the face of state non-compliance and send a clear message that it will not be tolerated", he said.

With respect to the United Kingdom-drafted resolution on Yemen, Nebenzia said the UN Security Council members did not reach a consensus on key individual wordings.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzya said that Moscow can not agree with "unconfirmed conclusions and reports that should be double-checked and discussed by the sanctions committee". The same report stated that although some weapons supplied to the Houthis were of Iranian manufacture, there has been no "sufficient evidence to confirm any direct large-scale supply of arms" by the Iranian government.

Iran's U.N. Mission reiterated Monday that it "categorically rejects allegations regarding arms transfer to Yemen".

In the end the UN Security Council accepted Russian resolution on technical extension of sanctions. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015, backing government forces fighting Iran-allied Houthi rebels.

In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition began a devastating bombing campaign against the Huthis that the United Nations estimates has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced 2 million, and created the world's worst humanitarian disaster. Millions of people are on the brink of starvation and more than 22 million - nearly the entire population - are in need, according to humanitarian agencies.

Iran has rejected Western claims that it was arming Huthi rebels in Yemen, saying the conflict was instead the result of British and United States arm supplies to Saudi Arabia.

During his first trip to Saudi Arabia past year, US President Donald Trump signed a $110 billion arms deal with the Saudis, with options to sell up to $350 billion over a decade.

Iran's mission to the United Nations charged that the United States and Britain had pushed an "unwarranted draft resolution" to advance an anti-Iran political agenda.

US envoy Kelley Currie accused Russian Federation and other countries that did not support the vetoed resolution to put pressure on Iran of "deciding to shield Tehran from responsibility".

Eleven members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the draft resolution, two countries abstained, while Russian Federation and Bolivia voted against.

After the veto, the UNSC unanimously adopted a Russian-drafted measure to extended for one year the sanctions regime against Yemen. The embargo was due to expire at midnight on February 26.
