Limping Taylor bludgeons Caps to victory

Limping Taylor bludgeons Caps to victory

Ross Taylor produced one of the greatest ever innings in the limited-overs cricket to help his team to stay alive in the 5-match ODI series against England. Taylor and Latham, who had a 178-run partnership in the first match, then rebuilt New Zealand's run chase only for Taylor to hurt himself again while diving to make his ground after he had passed 100 for the 19th time.

Taylor's injury came when he was on 109 and had to dive to avoid a run-out, inflaming the thigh strain that forced him out of the previous match in the series.

Taylor made a monumental 181 not out from 147 balls - and was batting virtually on one leg by the end after aggravating a thigh injury.

Throughout his innings, Ross hobbled on one leg but never let up as far as the boundaries were concerned. He already had one hundred to his name in this series in Hamilton but this innings felt different.

The result means the series will go to a decider in Christchurch on Saturday.

Tom Latham (71 off 67) and Colin de Grandhomme (23 off 12) also made key contributions, but it was Taylor who was the undoubted star of the show.

Before Taylor's brilliance, New Zealand had mostly been poor and a ninth loss in their past 11 games was on the cards. Chasing an improbable target target of 336, the Black Caps started on a disastrous note as both the openers (Martin Guptill and Colin Munro) were back in the pavilion without a single run on the board.

At least Root was able to move to his first worldwide hundred since last summer's Edgbaston Test against West Indies as he finally ended a run of 12 innings when he has scored more than 50 without reaching three figures.

Henry Nicholls looked nervy when he came to the crease but worked well to give Taylor most of the strike.

"It was a brilliant game, very tight in the end, but it was a brilliant last few overs by us", Ali said. "There were a lot of little partnerships in there and. we were able to get there".

"It's no use going out there helter-skelter, then falling for spit and playing catch up the whole time", Taylor said. While chasing such a total, you just want to set yourself small goals and give yourself a chance.

Once Bairstow fell, caught in the deep trying to hit Munro for another six, England faltered, losing eight wickets for 46 runs.

England should have put the match beyond reach after Bairstow and Root had them at 267-1 in the 38th over.

Tom Curran struck four fours from successive balls in the 50th and final over to elevate England to 335-9 - but it could have been so many more.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson on Sky Sports: "Ross played his best one-day knock - one of the best one-day knocks we've seen".
