Meghalaya elections: Ahead of swearing-in ceremony, 1 ally ditches Conrad Sangma

Meghalaya elections: Ahead of swearing-in ceremony, 1 ally ditches Conrad Sangma

Conrad Sangma, chief of National People's Party (NPP), took oath as even as the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) expressed reservation in forming the government with the BJP.

But fissures appeared when HSPDP accused NPP of taking a decision unilaterally and objected to Conrad Sangma as the choice for the post of the Chief Minister.

Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad earlier today conferred the oath of office to Sangma and his 11 member cabinet.

Moreover, the Chief Minister said it was his duty and responsibility to carry everyone all along. It was backed by six United Democratic Party (UDP) legislators, four from People's Democratic Front (PDF) MLAs, two each from BJP and Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) MLAs including one independent that raised the overall alliance to 34.

The ceremony was attended by Union minister for home Rajnath Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP's strategist for the northeast Himanta Biswa Sarma and a host of other dignitaries.

Meghalaya threw up a fractured mandate on Saturday with the Congress emerging as the largest party, marginally ahead of its rival, the National People's Party (NPP), an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Manipur. After a year of President's Rule imposed in the state, the Congress cobbled up an alliance to form the government in 2010.

Outgoing Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told journalists: "We have offered formulas to the UDP for working together - either the UDP should lead the government or share power for two-and-half years".

Echoing a similar stance, UDP President Donkupar Roy on Sunday extended the party's support to the NDP.

He said the new government would have an good environment to take the state forward.

He added: "Congress has the wherewithal to create a turnaround in any situation".

Sources on both sides of BJP and Congress say that the results of the North-East will not have any substantial impact on the Karnataka elections.

Seeking a "constructive contribution" from the Opposition as well as the ruling coalition, Sangma said, "I can assure you that our government is a government that will work for the overall development of the state".

Conrad Sangma defeated the then chief minister Mukul Sangma's wife Dikkanchi D Shira by almost two lakh votes, retaining the seat held by his late father for over four decades by the highest margin ever.
