Sanctuary cities can go away overnight: Judge Napolitano

Sanctuary cities can go away overnight: Judge Napolitano

The laws provide some of the most generous protections in the nation for immigrants facing deportation, but the Justice Department argues that they improperly venture into the enforcement of United States immigration law that is strictly a matter for the federal authorities.

Jail officials only will be allowed to transfer inmates to federal immigration authorities if they have been convicted of certain crimes.

The White House confirmed last week that Ms. Schaaf is under investigation for her actions. "Any attempt to restrict our ability to do that is not good policy".

One loss for California came last month, when a San Diego federal judge paved the way for construction of a section of Trump's proposed wall along the USA southern border over the objections of Becerra and environmental groups who alleged the federal government didn't properly review the project's impact on the desert ecosystem. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has said it will increase its presence in California, and Sessions wants to cut off funding to jurisdictions that won't cooperate.

These statutes prohibit local and state law enforcement agents from asking someone about their legal status or from voluntarily telling immigration officials when a possible criminal alien is set to be released from prison.

Re Justice Department sues California over "sanctuary" laws that aid those in USA illegally (March 7): This is the tyranny that the Founding Fathers feared.

The first state law feds are targeting is Assembly Bill 450.

Mr. Becerra and Mr.

Brown told reporters shortly after Session's speech to law enforcement officials Wednesday that it was unprecedented for him to "act more like Fox News than a law enforcement officer".

In comments last week, Ms. Schaaf said she had not publicized any information that endangered ICE officers.

Brown issued a statement Tuesday deeming the lawsuit a "political stunt" and said it and Sessions's Wednesday speech in Sacramento would further "divide and polarize America".

According to the Associated Press, the Trump administration filed the suit against the state of California, Gov. "Here in CA, we embrace our historic diversity, and we will do everything in our legal power to protect it".

The federal lawsuit says three recently-passed immigration bills violate the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution and jeopardize the safety of federal agents and California residents.

Brown blasted back at Sessions, who has been a key enforcer of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.

The U.S. Supreme Court reinforced the federal government's primacy in enforcing immigration law when it blocked much of Arizona's tough 2010 immigration law on similar grounds.

The Trump administration says that if Arizona's efforts to help federal authorities were illegal, then California's efforts to "obstruct" also are illegal.

Analysts disagree over the effects of sanctuary policies.

Afterward, she said of Sessions: "How dare you" vilify members of the community, distract people from a broken immigration system that breaks up families and distort the reality of declining violent crime in a "sanctuary city" like Oakland.

He also called the Trump administration "full of liars". Cities in California, Pennsylvania and IL have all won rulings limiting those efforts.

It is separate from other cases, now working their way through the courts, that are challenging the Justice Department's efforts to withhold federal crime-fighting funds from sanctuary communities.
