Team Sky 'happy to co-operate with UCI' in investigation over 'cheating' allegations

Team Sky 'happy to co-operate with UCI' in investigation over 'cheating' allegations

Team Sky said it took full responsibility for any mistakes that were made, but strongly refuted the claim that it ever used medication to enhance its riders' performance.

Britain's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee claimed Team Sky and Wiggins, a five-time Olympic champion, had used the banned drug not for medical purposes as a treatment for asthma but to enhance performance.

The report came after Russian hackers revealed in 2016 that Wiggins, the first British cyclist to win the Tour, had applied for therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) to have injections of the powerful corticosteroid triamcinolone before three of his biggest races.

But the report, corroborated by "confidential material from a well-placed and respected source" about Sky's medical policy from 2011-13, believes the 37-year-old may have been treated with triamcinolone on up to nine occasions over four years.

Wiggins said this week that he only used prescribed drugs for valid medical reasons and when asked if he categorically denied cheating, added: "A hundred per cent".

That conclusion was partly based on evidence from Sutton himself, who told the committee: "What Brad was doing was unethical, but not against the rules".

"I am told by the doctor he needs a TUE for this event et cetera".

"It's a very grey area with these substances because they're not permitted in competition but you're allowed to take them out of competition. I am calling for him and the doc to come forward now and tell the truth".

"We consider it important that, regardless of the nationality of athletes and teams, anti-doping rules are enforced consistently and fairly". Only the doctor and him can tell us. Teams that joined agreed to adhere to voluntary rules around the use of corticosteroids, among other substances. I can not account for answers that have been attached to different questions.

"If I technically did need it and could have it, I'd probably still not have it purely because of the perception of what TUEs are seen as now, which is wrong in itself, totally wrong".

"There's a report right there for them and for me WADA have no choice but to suspend him and take his title away".

"I have never seen anything like that".

Froome, meanwhile, has rubbished the select committee report. I've been there for eight years, since day one, when the team started.

The BBC also asked Lappartient whether he thinks Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford should resign. "I really would like to know. It's not my experience within the team that that's how the team operates", he said. "I wouldn't have stayed so long, I wouldn't have been in the team, I wouldn't still be in the team, if I didn't believe in the team and the people around me".

"I have no recollection of training with that group, when they were all together". I'm proud to be part of the team.

Four-time Tour de France victor Froome finished 10th in February's Ruta del Sol race, his first since an adverse drugs test was made public.
