Missouri Police Officer Killed, 2 Others Injured After Shootout

Missouri Police Officer Killed, 2 Others Injured After Shootout

Missouri State Highway Patrol has identified the Clinton PD officer killed in the line of duty on Tuesday as Christopher Ryan Morton.

"We're still piecing everything together", Sgt. Bill Lowe, from Missouri State Highway Patrol, told ABC News. But the man continued shooting, wounding all the officers. Upon arrival, Morton and two other officers came under fire from a suspect, entered the home and were struck by gunfire.

The injured officers underwent treatment for gunshot wounds - one in the arm and the other in the shoulder, CNN reported. However, authorities were later able to determine that the placed call did not originate from that location, but rather one in Windsor, about 15 miles away, Lowe said.

"They kept calling his name", Long said. He was found dead early Wednesday in a Clinton home where the officers were shot hours earlier while trying to apprehend him. When officers arrived at the home, shooting erupted. "We are still investigating on how it transpired as far as giving the residence that the officers were sent to, but that will be part of the continuing investigation".

After walking in, the suspect, James E. Waters, 37, started shooting at the officers, Lowe said.

Tammy Widger, 37, who lived at the home, was charged on Wednesday with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver and maintaining a public nuisance.

. "Our thoughts are with Officer Morton's family, the two officers who were injured, and the Clinton Police Department".

In 2014, a girl who identified herself as Waters' daughter posted to the man's Facebook page, insinuating that her father was locked up.

"We are sorry this happened", Rudolph said. Widger advised there was not a problem and there wasn't anybody else in the residence. "And that point in time that's when the tragedy occurred".

Waters served jail time for a drug trafficking felony in Buchanan County back in 2008 and was arrested again by St. Joseph Police in 2013.

U.S. Senator Roy Blunt also issued a statement following the death of officer, Christopher Ryan Morton.

At the time of the shooting, Waters was already out on bond for a weapons charge out of Harrisonville.

The patrol said Morton was a full-time Clinton officer from February 2015 through January 2017, when he temporarily became a reserve officer.

Morton was an Army veteran who had been deployed twice, serving as a bridge crew member and radio communications manager in Afghanistan.

Clinton is about 70 miles east of Kansas City. He attended Knob Noster High School and later studied at the University of Central Missouri. This fall, the Clinton Police Department lost Officer Gary Michael.

"It's just devastating", Henry County Sheriff Kent Oberkrom said. The other two officers sustained non-life threatening wounds, authorities said.

Now, once again, Clinton officers will face the disgusting task of burying one of their own.

Lowe spoke about the bravery of the Clinton Police Department and the community. They've endured a lot.

Lowe said they believe they know who the shooter is, but will not release any information until they "are positive" about his identity.
