Women strike, protest as the world marks Int'l Women's Day

WORK was halted Thursday as part of a 24-hour strike organised by the 8 March Commission and backed by 10 unions and some of Spain's top women politicians.

An effigy of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is seen while women's rights activists march along a busy street during a celebration of the International Women's Day in Quiapo city, Metro Manila, Philippines, March 8, 2018.

At midnight in Madrid, protesters went to the central square and banged pots and pans. The Socialist Party of America elected this day in honor of the strike in 1908 by the garment workers in NY, where females protested in opposition to working conditions. We do not accept worse working conditions, nor being paid less than men for the same work.

In Spain, women earn an average of 23 percent less than men, according to 2015 data of the National Statistics Institute (INE). Reports of abuse against women are increasing and activist sites like are counting murders of women. The ruling centre-right party, the Partido Popular (PP), said the action was "for feminist elites and not real women with everyday problems".

Women in Spain organized massive protests and traditional "piquetes", the information brigades aiming to convince fellow workers of striking in support of the common struggle.

In 1917, females in Russian Federation against the background of the war elected to strike and protest on the last Sunday in February for "Bread and Peace".

Rallies were also held in France, South Korea, Guinea and many other countries.

And after being held inside Vatican City for years, the Voices of Faith conference, which champions women's leadership in the global Catholic community, moved to the headquarters of the Jesuit order. In Kenya, African women are meeting today to discuss ending violence against women and girls with disabilities. These extraordinary women - and so many others - did not have obituaries in The New York Times.

In Rome, actress Asia Agento, one of the many women who accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault, reportedly participated in a march as well.

In Afghanistan, hundreds of women marched on Thursday to Kabul to bring attention to inequities in education, violence against women, and harassment.

The PSOE said progress had been made on women's rights in Spain but the female population still faced a number of obstacles to full equality.
