Emmanuel Macron meets PM Modi: $16-bn deals signed

A so-called "Industrial Way Forward Agreement" was signed between French utility EDF and India's NPCIL for the construction of six nuclear reactors at Jaitapur.

The French President arrived here on Friday and was received at the airport by Prime Minister Modi in a special gesture. During his interaction with the students, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke on the number of issues like education, climate change, the advance of digital era, the bond between both the nations including other issues.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Central National D'EtudesSpatiales (CNES) signed an Implementing Arrangement which will enable the two countries to provide end-to-end solution for detection, identification and monitoring of vessels in their respective regions of interest, which in India's case is the strategically important Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The bilateral trade between India and France from April 2016 to March 2017 reached 10.95 billion dollars.

"Your historical partner in Europe was the United Kingdom, and I want France to become the new partner", Macron told Indian media.

"In the future, Indian Ocean will play a crucial role in peace and stability, whether it is about environment or freedom of navigation", said the Indian Prime Minister.

India and France strengthened their 20-year-old strategic partnership on Saturday, signing an agreement for reciprocal logistics support between their armed forces and unveiling a blueprint to step up cooperation in the Indian Ocean to counter China's growing influence in the region.

"The values of liberty, equality and fraternity echo not just in France but are also deeply enshrined in Indias Constitution as well", the Prime Minister said.

The President was happy to note that close to 1000 French companies have invested in India. We can say this is going to be a new start of a good friendship. Mr. Macron will also take part in a Knowledge Summit which will be attended by more than 200 academicians from both sides.

On Monday, he heads to the chaotic Hindu holy city of Varanasi on the banks of the river Ganges, which the Indian premier has promised to modernise and clean up.

Both he and Mr Macron are often compared internationally due to their broadly similar political views, as well as youth and good looks.

And there were red faces when it emerged a former Sikh militant was invited to a dinner with him in Mumbai.

Mr Macron has so far opted for more sober and predictable dress - a dark suit.
