Jeff Flake threatens bill to nullify Trump's tariffs

Jeff Flake threatens bill to nullify Trump's tariffs

Arizona's GOP congressional contingent is giving President Trump's tariff proposal mixed reviews.

"Our economy and our national security are strengthened by fostering free trade with our allies and promoting the rule of law", he said.

Hours before the president signed an executive order implementing the new tariffs, trade ministers from 11 Pacific Rim countries signed a sweeping free trade agreement the US had been part of until Trump withdrew previous year.

Trump invited the workers to speak.

"I will immediately draft and introduce legislation to nullify these tariffs, and I urge my colleagues to pass it before this exercise in protectionism inflicts any more damage on the economy", Flake said in a statement.

Several lawyers were skeptical that a court would block the president.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have spoken out against the tariffs.

"When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade was are good, and easy to win", he tweeted. A WTO decision wouldn't halt USA tariffs, but rather authorize retaliation from trading partners.

"I don't think Republicans will put up with this, and I personally believe that we may be able to stop it in the Congress", Sen. But it may be hard to get a veto-proof majority with some Democrats supporting Trump's action.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the exemptions for Canada and Mexico are not enough. Even though tariffs on Mexico and Canada were excluded from President's Trump's announcement, he says he has no problem with them. "Congress can not be complicit as the administration courts economic disaster".

Both Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch of Utah and Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Ron Johnson of Wisconsin are planning hearings in coming weeks about the decision.

The people briefed on the plans said all countries affected by the tariffs would be invited to negotiate with the Trump administration to be exempted from the tariffs if they can address the threat their exports pose to US manufacturers.

In a Friday letter to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Johnson outlined concerns about the impact on his home state.

Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum imports will take effect in 15 days, with Canada and Mexico indefinitely exempted from the duties, according to people outside the White House who were briefed on the plans Thursday.

Prospects in the House for a bill to counter Trump are dim as well. Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan's spokeswoman, Ashlee Strong, said on Monday in a statement, "We are extremely anxious about the consequences of a trade war and are urging the White House to not advance with this plan".

However, most GOP lawmakers have balked at Trump's approach, which includes exemptions for Mexico and Canada and the opportunity for other countries to appeal for a similar reprieve.
