Kenyan president, opposition leader call truce

Kenyan president, opposition leader call truce

President Uhuru Kenyatta met opposition leader Raila Odinga in public on Friday for the first time since last year's hotly-disputed elections, with the pair promising to heal the country's divisions.

The Kenyan leader who was sworn in for his second and final term in office on November 28 in 2017 expressed confidence that a healthy collaboration with the opposition will usher in a new era of unity and prosperity.

On the NASA side, former Nyatike MP Edick Anyanga said the meeting between Raila and Uhuru has been long overdue.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Friday held talks with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and assured him of Washington's commitment to Kenya on trade and security, a statement said.

In September, after Kenya's Supreme Court overturned President Uhuru Kenyatta's election victory and ordered a new poll, Kenyatta dismissed the judges as "wakora", meaning "crooks" in Swahili.

Earlier this year, Mr Odinga swore himself in as the "people's president" and refused to recognise election victor Mr Kenyatta as head of state.

Mudavadi noted that the other three NASA co-principals, himself, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula were "neither aware, briefed, consulted nor invited", to the meeting between Kenyatta and Odinga.

Koigi was also in and out of the dark rooms under both Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi, in the 80's, as a result of his "rebellious and troublesome" nature.

The two men, who also faced off in a 2013 election marred by opposition allegations of vote-rigging, are vying for power in East Africa's economic hub that plays a key role in the Western-backed fight against neighbouring Somalia's Islamic extremists.

Noting "the economy has been down", Ndung'u said if the two "resolve their issues, well, at least it will show that we are moving forward and the issue to do with the election is it behind us".

"Elections come and go but Kenya remains; so as we must plan for the future, a future that will not be dictated by the forthcoming elections", said Kenyatta.

That's not a coincidence, said independent political analyst Martin Andati.

Mr Odinga boycotted the repeat election in October, saying adequate electoral reforms had not been made.

"The meeting must have been come out of pressure from the USA secretary of state", Andati said. "So, it helps ease the political tensions...."

"We refuse to be the leaders under whose watch Kenyans lead into a failed nation".
