Putin denies allegations of Kremlin-directed Russian meddling in United States election

Putin denies allegations of Kremlin-directed Russian meddling in United States election

"If the 13 Russian individuals and companies did interfere in USA elections, does that matter?"

"Why have you decided the Russian authorities, myself included, gave anybody permission to do this?" the Russian president asked Kelly, referring to America's own interference with foreign elections.

In the sometimes combative interview, Putin denied the charge by United States intelligence services that he ordered meddling in the November 2016 vote, claiming any interference was not connected to the Kremlin.

"Maybe they have dual citizenship or a green card, maybe the US paid them for this". During the interview, Putin also said that his U.S. counterpart has "leadership qualities" as "he takes responsibility when he makes decisions".

He then spoke about the accusations saying "so what if they're Russians?" he added "there are 146 million Russians". "I don't care. I couldn't care less". "I couldn't care less".

When Putin was asked whether he was concerned that Russian citizens were undermining democracy in the US, he suggested his hands were tied. Putin made the comments in a Moscow interview with NBC News' Megyn Kelly, the latest segment of which was released Saturday. Give us an official request. "Doesn't that sound ridiculous even to you?" he said.

The Russian president, who is running for another six-year term in office at the March 18 election which could ensure his presence at the seat of the country's power until 2024, professed ignorance over the Russian nationals' motives. But he also did not deny Russian interference. "I do not know, either", the Russian leader said. "There's no goal", Putin said.

US intelligence chiefs last month said Russian attempts to meddle in USA politics are continuing unabated and pose a threat to mid-term congressional elections in November.

"Are we the ones who imposed sanctions on the United States?" he asked.

"It's not our goal to interfere".

Trump himself has repeatedly shied away from condemning Russian Federation over the alleged meddling.

Putin suggested in the interview that the reason Trump has seemed deferential to him is he knew upon taking office that he needed to develop a "cooperative relationship" with Russian Federation and thus he needed to treat his counterpart with respect. "Donald is a more modern individual".
