UK forces converge on town in poison probe

UK forces converge on town in poison probe

Britain's Ministry of Defence and police have deployed about 180 troops - including some with chemical expertise - to remove ambulances and other vehicles involved in the incident and other objects.

They were discovered in a comatose state Sunday afternoon on a bench near a shopping center.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd warned the Government is "committed to doing all we can to bring the perpetrators to justice - whoever they are and wherever they may be".

"This was attempted murder in the most cruel and public way".

"When I found out I get shocked and immediately anxious for him and his family", said a 60-year-old neighbour, who did not want to be named.

Police identified the officer as Detective Sgt. Nick Bailey, and said he was conscious and talking with visitors.

British police have identified over 200 witnesses and are looking at more than 240 pieces of evidence in their investigation into a nerve agent attack on a Russian ex-spy and his daughter, the interior minister says.

In a statement Saturday, Wiltshire police, the local force, said Bailey wished to express his thanks to the public for its support.

The Home Office has said it knows what kind of nerve agent was used, but has refuse to disclose the information.

Former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Blair said the "extraordinary attack in Salisbury" is a good reason to investigate whether there is a pattern of former British intelligence collaborators dying in the UK.

Ms Rudd is visiting Salisbury, where they were exposed to a nerve agent in an "outrageous" attack on Sunday. "At the moment, our priority is going to be the incident, which is why I'm here".

At the cemetery, forensic tents were placed over the graves of Mr Skripal's wife and son. Entrances to the cemetery were closed off.

A police auto is transported in a convoy of police and military vehicles leaving Salisbury District Hospital over contamination fears.

Western intelligence services consider Russian Federation as a leading suspect, based on previous attacks that used a similar substance and method, a Western intelligence official told CNN. The official cautioned that the investigation was still in its early stages.

If a Moscow link were proved, it would plunge relations between the West and Russian Federation to a new low, and would call into question the British government's ability to protect residents of the United Kingdom at home.

"But in order to conduct such cases, it is necessary not to immediately run out on TV screens with unfounded allegations", Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russian state news agency Tass.

In Salisbury, the investigation continued to move at a fast pace.

Speaking in Berlin on Thursday, Litvinenko's window, Marina, told CNN there was a "similarity of a way to assassinate" between the attack on Skripal and the case of her husband.

The Russian spy's daughter who was caught up in a poisoning attack in Salisbury had "not done anything to deserve" her illness, her friend has said.

A British public inquiry found the killing of Litvinenko had probably been approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin and carried out by two Russians, Dmitry Kovtun and Andrei Lugovoy.

Yesterday, the investigation had widened as police sealed off the graves of Skripals wife, Liudmila, and his son, Alexander, and said 21 people had been treated as a result of the incident.
