In an emotional farewell speech, Tillerson warns Russian Federation and snubs Trump

In an emotional farewell speech, Tillerson warns Russian Federation and snubs Trump

"When Mike is over in, say, the Koreas or over dealing with Russian Federation or the Middle East, I think people are going to know that he speaks for the president". "He will do a fantastic job!" "When Donald Trump was selling steaks, vodka, and a fake university, Rex Tillerson was building Exxon into the largest energy company in the world".

He went on to reveal he had appointed Gina Haspel as Mr Pompeo's successor, the first woman to take on the prestigious position.

By projecting weakness to Pyongyang, Tillerson was undercutting Trump's message of strength - and thus making war more likely.

"The relationship between top management and the bulk of the State Department was toxic", said Ambassador James F. Jeffrey, a former senior diplomat and fellow at the Washington Institute, according to The New York Times. The president frequently complained to his West Wing advisers about Tillerson, and Tillerson once reportedly called Trump a "moron" behind his back. Tillerson never denied using the word.

But the United States faces a host of foreign policy challenges: curbing the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea; fighting terrorism in the Mideast, Africa and Afghanistan; maintaining unity in Europe; dealing with the physical and economic impacts of climate change; and limiting the global fallout from Trumps trade wars. Trump, the unidentified official said, wanted to have a new team in place ahead of such negotiations. The firing was just the latest in an exodus of administration officials, including those in Trump's inner circle, with the president already setting records for staff turnover and several other Cabinet secretaries facing ethics investigations.

Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and the first woman so chosen. She is a veteran CIA clandestine officer backed by many in the U.S. intelligence community but regarded warily by some in Congress for her involvement in the agency's "black site" detention facilities.

The surprise announcement came Tuesday morning.

Donald Trump said recently that he liked working with people who didn't agree with him.

Adding to the day's drama at the State Department, Steve Goldstein, the undersecretary for public affairs and public diplomacy, was also shown the door after issuing a statement supportive of Tillerson. Tillerson's support for the agreement put him at odds with Trump on one of the president's top foreign policy issues. I think he's going to be very happy.

Former U.S. officials suggested that, as the administration nears a planned summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un about Pyongyang's nuclear programme, it could rethink its stance on the Iran deal.

Speaking with reporters during an impromptu press conference on the White House lawn before leaving for a planned trip to California, Trump commented frankly on differences of opinion with Tillerson, specifically citing how to approach the Iran nuclear deal.

Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, said the Senate confirmation process for Pompeo should be "vigorous".

Former Canadian diplomat Colin Robertson said Canada should reach out to Pompeo right away, to welcome him into his new role.
